technically it should work with a 4.1 or 5.1 setup so long as you do not have any type of effect playing (echo, hall simulation etc). because it analyzes the signal from the speak and mutes matching signals from the mic (or at least I would assume). so it should pick up whats playing through the fronts and cancel them out, regardless if its coming from the front or rear.
