Lol, its actually pretty straightforward.
Open Sirfdemo. - It will open a Data Source Setup window which prompts for your comport and speed, these should be auto-detected for your device.
OK this box.
Finally select;
Action --> Synchronise Protocol and Baud Rate
SiRF demo will sync your device up to 38400 speed with the SiRF protocol, and save the changes.
Edit: You can switch back to NMEA at this point if you want by selecting;
Action --> Switch to NMEA protocol
Select the desired baud rate and then ok.
Then just close the app.
Don't forget to update the relevant settings in Windows, CF etc...
PS: If you fry your GPS that's your problem, but this process worked for me with no issues.
