This post mad me curious and I've done some research and found

I know that this maybe deemed as being completely off track but I wondered if anyone had tried to use Mapmonkey or Destinator 3 with the TomTom maps.
I noticed that the provider of the maps was supposed to be the same company

It may be Navteq that supplied the data but the destinator guys would have specified the format they wanted their maps in when they bought it. It's completely proprietary and very unlikely anything else will work.

I'm aware of the fact that destinator maps are way behind the competitors and I'm unhappy with that too. Anyway, as far as I know destinator is the only product that is more or less integratable in car-pc solutions, since most other navigation application are only available on PDA and/or do not provide an API to build applications on.
Nevertheless for me it works most of the time pretty well; only few situations where the old maps cannot calculate me a reasable route.
