you can update it to ping a URL, manually edit your config.xml and modify the following:
<INTERNETURL>
</INTERNETURL>
to something like:
<INTERNETURL>http://www.google.com</INTERNETURL>
This will make it hit google to change the internet status... There are some improvements in the next update if it appears to possibly slow some things down, this was fixed....
