GPS Receivers/Antennas

Below is a list of known good GPS Receivers/Antennas that work with Centrafuse.

GlobalStat BU-353
GNS 9833
Earthmate
Holux GM-210
Holux GPSlim 236 (tested only via USB cable)
Holux M-1200

NOTE: Garmin units will not work. It turns out that Garmin has locked their receivers to their software. Apparently they use a different protocol than everyone else. Some users have been able to make their Garmin receivers work with the use of 3rd party software. Please search for forums for threads related to this.

If you have other GPS receivers/antennas that you know work with Centrafuse, please list them below. They will be added to this list.

Please keep this thread to just posting about receivers that have been proven to work with Centrafuse. If you need to discuss these options or figure out which one is best for your application, please start your own thread. Such posts are laible to be deleted or moved accordingly.

What is the consensus on GPS receivers with an external Antenna wired in? With external antenna I mean sometihng like the "shark fins" that are available as aftermarket add-ons. Hirschmann (german manufacturer) makes an antenna that has GPS, GSM and WiFi combined. This would be a quite cool gadget for the wardriving afficionados, but I am afraid that putting up that thing on the roof and wiring the antenna connectors all the way through the car will essentially give you a worse signal than a small antenna in the dashboard area (due to interferencen on the multiple feets of cable you need).

Has anyone tried this?

This is JUST an antenna, NO receivers. I'm running this unit with an ET301 from SparkFun Electronics. They don't make the unit any more, unfortunately. Though, they may have a replacement.

I'm only using the GPS aspect of the antenna. I have noticed no difference between this set-up and the BU-353.

Yeah, I am aware that it is just an antenna, and have probably phrased that sentence a bit weirdly.

But the fact that it is just an antenna is what worries. With a wagon like mine you'd have to pull about 7-10ft of wire from antenna to dash where I intend to locate all parts. And the possible interference on that worries me. If it was antenna and receiver in one it would be cool. And relocating the GPS receiver near the antenna to cut down on antenna wiring length adds the problem of feeding power to the GPS receiver...

How have you wired it? Roof-mounted antenna, I assume, then near the roof to the front and down to the dash? Or from the roof down to the "floor" of the car and then under seats/carpet? Or do you have your GPS receiver / carpc located in the trunk?

Mounted the antenna on the roof, ran the GPS cable to the panel behind the drivers side passenger seat (the the left of the passenger) which is where my computer is at. On the I just removed the favtory AM?FM antenna on my GTi and replaced it with this thing since I don't care for radio anyways.

The ET301 doesn't require anything but bus power. It will take a battery, if you want.
