Post New FAQ section - Windows Tips

Folks,

I've made a new FAQ section called "Windows Tips and Tricks" with two separate categories: XP and Vista.
Centrafuse Carputer, CarPC & UMPC Forums - FAQ: Windows Tips and Tricks

I've added one FAQ item to XP already. If you have some suggestions please share. I know there are tons of collective data amongst you Centrafuse-ers, so please chime in and help me build this section out.

Be sure to note whether or not its for XP or Vista.

Thanks everyone!
Reagan

Only Admins can add official FAQ items, just post them here and i will distill them and put them in there as they come in.

I have one...all MS OS's.

Disabling video hardware acceleration works WONDERS for the PCI bus, i.e. greater thruput. A big plus for those of us running DSP, which eats CPU cycles...
XP also has an option to disable write combining...
I know my MS-7191 board CHOKES the bus with 3D hardware enabled!

Also, I've actually noticed the screen is SMOOTHER in CF with this disabled!

It's also beneficial to run just 'Standard Graphics Adapter' driver as well, instead of the manufactuerers driver...this also still leaves sleep/hibernation options available...

The only downside I've noticed is the inability to dim the monitor thru the dim button in CF...perhaps with a notch or two of hardware acceleration?

of course one of the main XP tricks is to replace the normal logon system with minlogon from Windows XPe.

This works very well and my boot times have much improved. Resume is also a snap.

The major disadvantage with minlogon is that it removes the ability to use windows folder sharing so accessing your main home PC to get new music may be a problem however I have found a partial solution.

On the main PC run an FTP server - FileZillar is free. On the Car Pc run FTPDrive. This will make it possible to mount the FTP connection as if it was a normal windows drive giving back access to all your main PC files (the ones you chose to share).
