If you're not using the following, disable them:

1. IDE ports
2. Serial ports
3. Parallel ports
4. Onboard LAN
5. Floppy drive
6. Floppy drive seek at boot time
7. SATA
8. Lan Boot

Any one else have any suggestions, please add

fridgemagnet will become famous soon enough
To take this a little further, for any drives not being used, disable the controller, not just the device channel.
For example you can disable the individual channels for each IDE device on most mobo's but if you disable the Primary and/or secondary IDE controllers, the BIOS and POST won't even bother to check the channels at boot.

That's right, it will just go right to the HD and boot will be much faster.

Hey guys, I got to disable some things today in the BIOS. I disabled some of the things listed above. The ones I disabled are not even checked at startup anymore. I am around 12+ seconds right now. That even includes about 4-5 seconds to check memory at startup.

Is there anyway to disable that part also? I couldn't find anything in BIOS for it, unless I am looking at the wrong place.

Allen

Is there an option for a 'Quick memory test' or something like that?
Enable that, although even then it takes a couple of seconds for some boards to do it.

Not bad, but I'm sure that it would take longer if playing from a USB device/CD/or a movie.

I then tested a Kenwoord double din system, I believe. The device took 6 seconds for the radio to be heard, but a full 12+ seconds for the screen to be seen and the touchscreen to be active.
Don't be fooled by "it has booted fully because it plays music". These systems are honed to "appear" fast. I know some folks who have shelled out bigtime for a Pioneer and it takes 60 seconds to FULL functionality (GPS, etc.)

That's the biggest thing I've noticed as well too.

People compare these CarPCs to their standard run of the mill head unit...which is apples to oranges.

Comparing it to another Nav unit is more like it...and compare it for time to boot to GPS on each unit, not just music.

Here is my results:
MOTHERBOARD: VIA NX15000G
RAM: DDR2 1GB SODIMM
HDD1: MTRON 3025-016 SSD
HDD2: Transcend 32GB SSD
PSU: DSATX 220W
USB: BT, GPS, WLAN, UMTS
OS: Windows XP SP2 with disabled few services

Resume from hibernate to playing song in centrafuse and show me GPS position: 23s (Bios screen take 15s)
Restart, auto start centrafuse(CF shortcut into Run folder in Start menu), start playing song, and show me GPS position: 63s (bios screen take 14s)

Next time when I will put carpc out of car I will check in bios and disable all unused things because BIOS screen take so long to start CF...

I'm sure that aftermarket units when booting into a movie or GPS will be muck slower. I just replaced my old motherboard with the Jetway 1.5GHz board and that thing is fast. It comes out of hibernation in less then half the time of my old board.

For others, make sure to enable Fast Boot, I really don't think that there is an option not to check RAM, although one person with a laptop found an option in his BIOS to completely bypass BIOS unless a change had been made. He posted a video of the boot times and it booted in 5+ seconds.

Also, go deep into the Bios and disable parrallel ports and additional serial ports. I know that you're using the one for the HDRadio, but there are internal additional ports that show up in the bios as well.

I've disabled everything on my bios that could be disabled and it went from a boot time for hibernation of 45 secs to 24 secs that's from button push to bios to logon screen to music playing. Thats on my old PIII 866hz intel I815 board too.
