Windows XP Embedded

Has anyone run CF using XP Embedded? I got a copy in my MSDN subscription and was thinking about building an image and trying it out to maybe cut boot times.

Any suggestions as to what to include?

yes, very interesting, I install CF on a Infill G4 CarPC with SSD (Solid state disk) - to reduce Read/write on SSD it is very interesting to run with WinPe or XPembedded :-)

Shell

Got embedded on to my truck computer. CF is running but with no bluetooth support yet. I have been working on getting the boot times cut down. I am trying to use the minlogon components, however I read that this is best used when explorer is not going to be your shell. Is there any way for me to get the shell components out of centrafuse and use them for a custom shell? Thanks for any help.

not sure what you mean, when you change your shell from explorere.exe to centrafuse.exe, centrafuse does become your shell...

what shell components are you talking about inside centrafuse?

I am just getting started with building a custom shell in embedded. In the tutorial they are saying that I need to build components out of the application that I want to use as shell. Which is going to be CF. I am wondering if there is a easy way I can import the shell out of CF into my embedded image.

you would need to make cf into an xpe package... that seemed like a lot of work when i was playing around.

I just went with xpe and minlogon, i ran a cmd window when windows booted and made adjustments to the pc from there.

When i was done i just changed
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\shell" to run centrafuse.

I ended up finding that xpe was running about the same speed as xp with min logon integrated anyway so i gave up on that.... now i just need to actually properly complete my setup and get EWF in there, buy centrafuse and get my pc off the floor into the car...

From what I have been reading when using minlogon you want to use a custom shell. If you use explorer or winlogon it is useless to include minlogon. I too am trying to get EWF working, pretty tricky to me at least. I got it to boot with EWF but after FBA it was just BSD. Oh well thats why I am trying to make CF the only shell working with minlogon. That should speed boot considerably. When making CF a package or component were you using filman and regmon to get the files you needed?

You don't need to "Make CF in to xpe package". Just add "Windows Installer Provider" component to your XPe image. You will be able to install any software.
