Has anyone tried one of these: Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 - Expands your music and movies into surround sound

Its new from soundblaster and am thinking of getting one to use with my Infill G4 but not sure if the G4 will be powerful enough and whether the mixer will be controllerble through CF.

Anyways hoping somebody can provide feedback

Cheers

James

I think in the MP3Car forums, maybe even this one, i have heard bad things about this card. I was going to upgrade to this, after trying out the Turtle Beach SRM (which is garbage). In the end the comparisons between the Live 24 and X-Fi werent all that much to get me to switch. Not to mention all the issues people with this card are having. So far, in my view, the Live 24bit seems to be the best.

Hi HiJack,

The issues that you experienced with the Turtle Beach SRM, are they only when you tried to access the radio? Did it work fine otherwise?

Also, do you have an AMP? Was there a loud POP every time you put the G4 into Standby?

I'm after a USB powered Sound Card that fully recovers from Sleep without any issues. I currently have a G4 and a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 NX which max's out on the volume when ever resuming as well as CF not recognising the card until a restart of CF.

Thanks.

Sorry I missed this question, sometimes I get no emails saying someone has responded. When you talk about accessing the radio, do you mean XM and HD? Yes they only play through the front 2 speakers. I thought the sound was bad in general, it didnt sound high quality, and alot of interference from nearby devices could be heard over the speakers, unless remotely placed. There was no pop, but thats because I use AMP_CTRL which turns the amps on after everything has loaded and then turns the amps off before shutdown. If you really want a good card, I recommend finding a Sound Blaster Live 24bit USB card, I dont think they make it anymore but it seems to be the most compatiable. Only draw back is that it only has one line in and one mic in and you can only use one or the other. Mitch created a line selector which eleminates not having enough line in ports.

In the end, avoid the Turtle Beach SRM, its so cr@ppy.

I use the Creative Audigy 2 NX, pretty good sound but crappy drivers. The system has fixed speaker output settings and i can use it either in 4 speaker mode (without sub) or 5.1 mode, missing the center. There is no 4.1 channel mode for some reason.

Also the system for sending 2 channel sound to all channels (CMSS) loses its settings every reboot and has to be disabled and then enabled again. I am waiting for someone to try the XFi before i jump and upgrade.

cheers.

I'm using the ADS Instant Music DAC... using SPDIF to my audio processor. It works great for output, but the input doesn't work. It worked through RR/Winamp w/ the line-in plugin but no cigar w/ CF.

I have that pop in my speakers when I turn on the G4. How do you use AMP_CTRL?

You simply install it into DOS.... Once it is installed thats it. You also have to use hibernate trigger which eliminates the pop when going into hibernation and coming out of it.

Here is a link to the thread that explains how to use it. I have attached the files to this thread, all you need to do is find the hibernate trigger program. The soft shutdown and startup files you put into hibernate trigger and they will stop and start the service while hibernatining....
