USB microphone

For voice recognition and phone operations, I see people talk about plugging it into the mic in port of their soundcard.

Can you tell me if a USB microphone would work with CF?

Thanks!

Allen

Which Andrea mic works best? I tried the Soundmax (bundled from Asus) and it was acceptable for noise suppression, but there wasn't any echo cancellation.

Does anyone else have problems with echo?

Is there a cost-effective mic with echo cancellation? The Andrea DA-350 is just too expensive...

Maybe Andrea USB-SA? Anyone tried it?

I've used the Andrea SoundMax and, obviously, it does nothing for echo cancellation as you said.

I've tried the SOHO echo cancellation card and I've yet to solve all of the electronics-noise with it (the sound quality and echo cancellation are impeccable on my desktop PC in the house...the noise is from something in the car).

That USB-SA with the EchoStop looks VERY interesting...and $50.00 for the hardware and software bundle, if it works, it's a bargain!!

So the synopsis is:

USB-SA is good for voice audio w/echo cancellation, but poor stereo audio quality?

I am guessing you are asking me this question...

Yes, basically thats what I experienced. Thats why I decided to use the onboard sound card for audio-out.

I dont know who else can test this besides myself and Alok, but if people have this device they can confirm what I have noticed.

Does that mean you can hook up the USB-SA and use it for your phone/voice-command microphone, use your on-board sound card (or whatever sound card you're currently using to "rock" to), and still have the software echo cancellation?

Or do you have to use the USB-SA's output to get the echo cancellation?

I believe you do have to use the Andrea sound cards output to take full advantage of the echo cancellation. I dont currently have that setup and it seems to work ok without it, but I am planning to route the Andrea output to the onboard line-in to see if it makes any different.

My car is not the best sound proof car in the world when I am driving, so I get noise in the background when I try to record something while driving.

I still have some more testing to do, I will update you guys with the result.

Just an update, I tried to use the line out from the Andrea USB sound card to the line-in of my in onboard soundcard. As soon as I did that, I noticed a lot of engine noise because its right under the center console close to the engine. I already have a ground loop isolator for my other sound card, dont want to invest in another one just for this. I will try to move the card to the trunk and try testing it again.

I did test the echo cancellation with the onboard audio out and just the mic and it does seem to do a good job when you have the directional beam option setup. But with the "speaker phone" option the other party could still hear echo of their own voice. I had to to turn down the speakers to stop the echo.

I will test it again after moving the sound card to the back. Let me know if you have any questions.
