i have a licensed vag com software, and the 15 quid obd2 cable from ebay...

not too sure wot k/l kk/l mode is?

Also how do you change the header value?

at present i can get fault codes via vag com but centrafuse is oblivious at the fact that i have the obd2 plugged in

K/L KK/L is what you have right now, if you can use vag-com.

OBD2 (iso in your case) is a different protocol.

Some of the more expensive interfaces can switch between the different protocols, and as for changing the header value, some interfaces can be reprogrammed with supplied software (ex. www.OBD-diag.com).
As far as i know i just a matter of sending a "AT-command" just like centrafuse does right to change the specifik value (centrafuse for example turns off Echo when initializing the obd device).

I know it might sound like jibberish, i'm a bit confused myself. But it all comes down to choosing the right interface from the beginning, i've tried 3 so far and none of them has worked fully.

futuretec, At the moment it would appear that you would need one cable for Vag-Com and a different one for OBD2.

I purchased a Vag-Com cable recently and I'm set on trying to write my own app for interfacing it properly with Centrafuse. I only just tested the cable for the first time last night and it appears to be in working order.

I don't know how complex this is going to be but I'm guessing I won't have anything ready for quite some time.
