OBD hardware

Other than price, is there any significant diference between the ELM 323 and the ELM 327 from a features / performance point of view?

ELM Chipsets (Scantool devices)

Yes, here's the scoop:

There are three main protocols used for OBDII compliance.
ISO, PWM, and VPW

Ford mainly uses PWM, GM VPW, and pretty much everyone else uses ISO.

ELM 320, 322, 323 are offered as separate chips supporting the respective protocols that exist today.

You can get a chip that works w/ for example my car (VW Jetta 2002) and Volkswagen uses the ISO protocol, which is ELM323 chipset.
These devices are single protocol only, hence they are cheaper.

The ELM327 chipset, on the other hand, will handle any of the 3 protocols, and also supports the new CAN BUS (next generation OBD) interface that some new cars are coming with. These are little higher in price, but in my opinion worth the extra 30-40 dollars b/c you wont have to buy another if you get a new car. Plus it will work on your buddy's car too. Here's the link to the multi-protocol edition:

A few items, need some help

Hey Reagan.

I've been searching all over the place for this information you've given -- not sure what combo words/phrases worked for me to get here so I'm just going to take a second to put some tags below for those in the same situation:

OBD OBDII OBD-II OBD-2 OBD2, Hardware, Configuration, USB

Now, with all this being said, I'm new to the idea, and have about 4 hours of research under my belt. Especially when I (for some reason) thought the iBus was what gave me that information, just to realize after I get that installed, and alas, it's a seperate peice of hardware.

I'm not down for dropping $130 on this, especially if there are other products that will do the same thing for much less -- but I'm just not comfortable purchasing the hardware without someone (you?) saying "well, yeah it looks like it's supposed to do the same thing". :-)

If you wouldn't mind, peeking a couple of the links I have below to 'similar' USB-style products and let me know if you feel they will work or not (even thought they may not officially have been tested with Centrafuse (I'll happily do the testing and report back, which will ultimately broaden this option for others knowing it will (or will not) work with Centrafuse.

Ebay: CAN OBD2 OBDII USB Interface ISO VPW PWM 15765-4 ELM327

Ebay: ELM327 OBD-2 CAN-BUS USB Interface Scanner OBD-II Tool

Ebay: ELM327 OBD II USB Scan tool / ELM 327 OBD2 OBD 2 OBDII

obd2allinone : OBD2 All-In-One Scan Tool w/ USB

I'm not 100% sure what my car is (more research to come) -- though I don't mind getting a single protocol device, such as the one you have.

I have a 2002 325Ci BMW (e46), which I 'think' is ISO, so the first option you gave "http://www.scantool.net/products/product_info.php?cPath=8_1&products_id=41" should be fine...

Just curious, and hoping that this thread will help others as well.

I have this one (for my 2002 Accord) and it works perfectly:
http://www.scantool.net/products/pro...products_id=41

According to scantool.net support pages, every OBD2 BMW vehicle they have been able to verify has used the same ISO9141-2/ISO14230-4 OBD2 protocol (see here):
http://www.scantool.net/?mode=displayCV&make=BMW

So as long as the tools you are looking at are compatible with the ISO9141-2/ISO14230-4 OBD2 protocol, then it most likely would work with your car, except it may not be fully compatible with CF since CF was developed using www.scantool.net products.

But GeeDee says the other brand he bought off of eBay works perfectly. That one is only about $15 more than the scantool.net one I bought. And it is a 327 chip which work with all current OBD protocols vs. just the one like the one I have.
