It might be easier to use a Phidgets sensor, the plugin already exists for that, and temp sensors are readily available for it.

Are there any updates on this? I wanted to do something like this and integrate it with phidgets interface to implement automated climate control. I wish the phidgets plugin allowed for external inputs from a user.....

Nah sorry Bxsteez, I changed my design for the carPC and ended up not needing this plugin.
But, It is mostly a complete plugin (just without any real world testing whatsoever). If you have a need for it and can help me finish it off then I would be happy to do that.
Tell me what you need the plugin to do (very specifically) and how you want to use your phidgets and we can go from there (PM me if you want).
Same goes for anyone else, I'm happy to try and adapt it where possible.

is this still in works? did you hook up the phidgets by wiring it to the actual buttons on the climate control, and using + and - to 'push' the buttons, is that how you are doing it?

Argh, I forgot about this one again. It looks like I lost the source code or something and the code I have left is significantly un-finished.
As I haven't ended up using phidgets at all (yet...) I haven't got anything to test code with.
If someone is keen to write this themselves I'd be happy to hand them the source code.

i was thinking about like, a resync button, because you the bmw min is 60 so you the plugin to 'push' the degrees x number of times like 50 or whatever, and then the plugin starts back at 60. it's like an auto resync
