Product Review: HLT 7dBi 2.4GHz Mobile Antenna

Hey folks -

Just wanted to give a quick product review on this. I was in the market for a better connection in the Prelude-PC. I was using a Hawking 7dBi interior antenna on my rear deck but I was not pleased with the range I was getting. Obviously, being inside the car, I was losing my range.

I began searching around for a good antenna to use; soon I found out I was in over my head. Before searching, I was not aware of the various types of 802.11 antennas. The best I knew is I wanted the highest dBi rating I could get and to make sure it was in the 2.4GHz range.

While searching on mp3car.com, I quickly found multiple links to Buy Wireless WIFI LAN, Networking Equipment, Bi-directional Amplifiers, Cables & Accessories from HyperLink Technologies - www.hyperlinktech.com with multiple reviews. After finding a ton more antenna sites, I decided to order from the HLT website. The reasons being: Multiple positive reviews, positive comments on their parts, and quite frankly - They looked like more of a professional outfit.

I will cut this out to my review of the product I purchased...

2.4GHz 7dBi Vehicle Magnetic Mount Omni-Directional Antenna

I was a bit stand-offish on ordering this antenna. I was afraid that it was going to be a lot bigger than it was. From the base of the magnet mount to the top, it is 11.5" (or so) tall. It actually is very small in stature and isn't an eye sore like I was afraid of.

The range over the interior antenna, out of the box, was excellent! The normal position that I work on my car, in my garage, I am able to pick up both routers within my house. With those two, I am only able to connect to one of my WAP's. I was also picking up 5 other WAPs within my block. I took a quick cruise with Net Stumbler open and was just completely amazed at the amount of WAP's I was picking up compared to my interior antenna.

If you rely soley on 802.11, enjoy war driving, or just want some better range: I highly suggest this antenna. It works as advertised and provides excellent range in small package. Now I am starting to dabble in increasing the power of my current WAPs with new antennas. =)
