iPhone users
If you own an iPhone, and wish to install the 3.0 software, there is a way to do it with out jailbreaking it. works like a charm (although I am on a mac, i think there are instructions. make sure you torrent the correct version of the 3.0 software (links are on the post below the instructions)
Here's how to get tethering on any iPhone right now, no jailbreak, for free | 9 to 5 Mac
make sure you get the 8.2 pre-release 1. There are links for it on that site, along with instructions. SOme people say it works with the iTunrd 8.2 final, however, i was unable to do so. If your on a mac, its eaiser to set up a dummy account and do it.
Please don't torrent on it, you will get one hell of a bill if they notice a huge difference in bandwith usage on your account.

It seems faster, apps load quicker, its more responsive, it has cut, copy and paste!!!, push notification, MMS (atleast when AT&T allows it!), turn by turn direction is enabled for the SDK so Tom Tom has an app for it, peer to peer bluetooth connection and a lot more...

actually, since this is about tethering, i'll move it to Wireless Devices.
This is huge, now Internet based plug-ins can be created, opens a whole new set of opportunities.

I wonder if there's a way without jailbreaking the phone to get the tethering to work. It's my work phone and they allow the MS phones to tether (per our plan). I won't be using it a ton, just in a pinch.

Yes you can
I cant remember what you do, but there is a command you can enter into the phone via SSH, which puts it into TEST mode or similar. Have a look on Google, im sure you will find the solution
Although I recall it can cause MMS not to work? Hmmmm.....

Here are the instructions to enable tethering and MMS on the iPhone 3.0 without jailbreaking. You just have to enable it in itunes with a command line and upload a IPCC file to your iphone to modify the AT&T carrier settings.
I have Tethering and MMS on my iPhone -- and Yes, I'm on AT&T - Aaron Krill
I have done just the tethering, it works great! Haven't tried MMS yet.

nintwala - so have you opted not to jailbreak, or are you waiting for the official Cydia for iphone 3.0?
I think I'll wait, as the hacked type version sounds risky!

yeah, I am going to wait it out too. Right now, there is virtually nothing that I need from jailbreak. I used to use the PDAnet for tethering with jailbreak, thats about it. I will wait it out until there is a real need for it.
AT&T needs to get their head straight and figure out what they are going to do about tethering and MMS.
